How to Fix a Phobia

Article: This article lists the ways to get rid of a phobia. Flooding is a high degree of exposure to the phobic object. Desensitization involves muscle relaxation while gradually increasing the exposure to the phobic object. Medication is to help reduce fear or panic. Reconsolidation is trying to switch traumatic memories with new memories to help prevent the return of phobia.

Connection: This article relates to Behavior Therapies in chapter 15 and Phobia Disorders in chapter 14. A phobia is an irrational fear of an object or situation. Modeling can help eliminate phobias by learning through watching and acting as the model does. If someone has a fear of dogs and watches a model approach , touch, pet , and then hug the dog, then the phobic person may feel more at ease to follow the models actions. Flooding and Desensitization are both therapies based on classical conditioning.
